Harvest Fest

This weekend is the Harvest Fest out at the new Historical Museum in our county. We headed out there this morning for a glimpse into the past. I thought it was a good connection for the kids since we've been reading the Little House books, and also had just visited my Uncle Chad's farm and seen his farming equipment- both old and new.

How many farmers does it take to make a bale of hay? This baler was powered by a team of mules.

Mama? Dese chickens real? Dis rooster real?

Also, in the back of my mind was a movie Joel and I recently watched, King Corn. It isn't hard to see why farming changed so drastically in the 1900s, and even at a national, government level in the 1970s. Old time farming was HARD WORK. Seriously. Farming now is too, but it's unreal how hard those people had to work before engines and modern technology. Unreal!
